Preparedness of Instructional Materials for Supporting the Implementation of Curriculum through Online Distance Teaching and Learning at National TVET Institutions in Kenya
Main Article Content
Abstract
The rise in the use of technology applications has enabled institutions of learning to adopt ICT in the provision of education and training. This has caused immense pressure for online courses at TVET institutions. The measure to address this requires a responsive curriculum for training through online mode be implemented; hence the need for TVET to be adequately prepared. Despite the importance attached to online teaching and learning, preparedness for the same has continued to face several setbacks in TVETs in Kenya; one of it being insufficient instructional materials. The purpose of this study was to assess the preparedness of instructional materials in supporting the implementation of curriculum through online distance teaching and learning at national TVET institutions in Kenya. The study was anchored on Bruner’s constructivist learning theory. Data was collected from three national polytechnics where, trainers in Applied Sciences Department, trainees, heads of department and principals were the main respondents. A sample size of 248 respondents comprising of 3 principals, 3 heads of department, 35 trainers and 207 trainees was selected. Purposive sampling technique was used to select trainers, HoDs and principals; while stratified sampling technique was used to select trainees. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. The validity and reliability of research instruments were ascertained accordingly. Quantitative data was analyzed in percentages, mean and standard deviation; while qualitative data was analyzed in themes. The findings of the study demonstrated moderate availability of online distance teaching and learning instructional materials. This finding was attributable to financial constraints. The study recommends TVET institutions to partner with online libraries, content providers, and open educational resources platforms to ensure that students have seamless access to a wide range of relevant and up-to-date online learning materials.
